Corporate Consulting

Research indicates that more money is being fueled into the health field. Statistics Canada states that the "major funder of research and development spending was the business enterprise sector, which contributed $1.5 billion..." (Statistics Canada, 2004). Employers are looking at ways to reduce health insurance goldweights.jpgpremium costs and improve company morale. Spending money on health services such as nutrition and fitness education provides employees with valuable information that will ultimately improve their productivity and reduce absenteeism.

More companies are looking at implementing wellness programs in the workplace. Successful organizations have found value in healthy employees which is why they continue to invest money in this area. Healthy employees means greater productivity, less missed work days, and a larger bottom line. Statistics Canada states that "...Canadian employers have lost over $12 billion to absenteeism..." (Buffett Taylor, 2000).

Employee absenteeism has been steadily increasing over the years. In 2004, Canadian employees lost 3.7% of their work time for personal reasons. Statistics Canada indicates that in 2003, full-time employees missed 9 days due to personal reasons compared with 7.3 in 1997. Employees working in the public sector lost even more days due to personal reasons (11.4 days vs. 8.5 days), and unionized workers lost more days compared to non-unionized employees (12.8 days vs. 7.2 days). For a company of 1000 employees earning an average of $190/day and missing an average of 7.3 days, that translates into a loss of $1400 per employee per year...a total of $1.4 million per year (Statistics Canada, 2003).

Workplace wellness is becoming a priority for employers. Employers want employees to be educated on healthy lifestyle habits not only to improve their health, but also to prevent diseases, reduce insurance premiums, and improve company morale. It is for these reasons why employers are implementing a broad range of initiatives to encourage healthier behaviours. In Canada, the wellness industry is only in its infancy and the majority of employers are currently not promoting sufficient health education (Buffett Taylor, 2000). Employees are the organization's most critical asset plus corporate wellness programs have proven to return $1.95 to $3.75 per employee per dollar spent (Oxford Heart Health Network, 2005).
