    WHY HEALTH & WELLNESS ?

Health and wellness is the next trillion dollar industry (Paul Zane Pilzer, 2001). It has been suggested that the health and wellness industry will reach this mark by year 2010 due to the increasing number of people becoming more health-conscious, and people wanting to practice disease prevention or simply learn healthier lifestyle habits. We truly are becoming a more health-conscious society, as indicated in the media No Excuseswhere we are inundated with nutrition and lifestyle-related articles, and TV programs which regularly feature health segments. It is nearly impossible to go a day without being reminded of the impact of the lifestyle choices we make and the power of nutrition.

Canadians are realizing they need to become proactive and take control of their health. In fact, more than two thirds of us are concerned with specific nutrients ranging from fat to cholesterol to sugar and sodium to caffeine. Fat and vitamins are both primary concerns among men and women. Calcium and iron are more of a concern for women while men are equally concerned about sodium intake. Some of the hottest topics that influence food choices among consumers include: maintaining good health, weight loss/maintenance, prescribed diet, and negative media coverage. Motivations for changing or improving eating habits involve health maintenance, weight loss, accommodating family members, preventing disease, and looking better (Tracking Nutrition Trends, 2002).
